The new CargoSense-AXLE is a wheel axle sensor for rail freight transport which, thanks to powerful acceleration sensors and algorithms, can detect not only flat spots but also wheel bearing damage. Temperature monitoring is also possible. This sensor is currently undergoing intensive testing and is set to be rolled out on a large scale next year.

CargoMon Systems GmbH is delighted to have won DB Cargo as a newcustomer. As part of a tender, CargoMon was able to convince the DB Cargo team with a variety of innovations and expertise made possible by its many years of experience in monitoring rail freight
transport. The solutions tailored to the customer’s specific needs and the range of innovative services were decisive factors in the award of the contract.
In the medium term, CargoMon Systems will not only provide the solar-powered tracking devices, but also offer various sensor solutions that cover a wide range of applications. These include the precise weighing of freight wagons, the detection of flexible containers on special pocket wagons, as well as track-accurate GPS localisation.
These innovations will make it possible to optimise internal production processes and reduce costs in the future, as well as to offer new services demanded by the market.
Thanks to the possibility of real-time weighing on the wagon using sensors, overloading, for example, can be recognised during loading and made transparent to the shipper via smartphone.
Dr Stefan Mahlknecht, Managing Director of CargoMon Systems GmbH, says: “With DB Cargo, we are expanding our opportunities to use innovative telematics and sensor solutions on a large scale and thus make a valuable contribution to the further progress of digitalisation in rail freight transport.”

After a test phase with a single wagon for several months, Captrain in Portugal confirmed that weight measurement was reliable over the long run and in the range below 2% comparing with several measurements on weighting stations.
This led Captrain to decide to equip a fleet of both existing and new wagons for timber transport with CargoMon’s “PrecisionWeight” solution, so that in future weight measurements at external weighing stations can be avoided and Captrain is informed at all times about the exact loading weight of the wagons.

Advantages of accurate weighing:
1. Overloading and high cost of a stopped train because of overload can be avoided
2. Loading can be closer to 100% as real-time monitoring of weight allows for precise loading
3. Higher utilisation of wagons capacity means overall less wagons needed in a fleet thus large cost savings can be achieved
In 2022, the time has finally come to replace the tried-and-true but aging CargoMon portal with a new dashboard-based IoT web platform, complemented by a comprehensive APP that facilitates on-site installation and diagnostics on the car

CargoMon provides the complete hardware, the IoT backend and the APP solution. The new CargoSense multisense sensors are used, which not only take over the door status, but also the interior monitoring by means of humidity and temperature sensors.

Over 20 timber wagons were equipped with CargoSense-Weight sensors and matching displays for more than half a year in real-life operation to assist customers in loading the wagons.
The result is impressive, over 98% of the loading measurements came to an accuracy of less than 4% deviation. This makes the solution a great help in avoiding discarding due to overloading detection on the line.
Nonetheless, this is not the end of the line. CargoMon is developing an even more accurate weighing technology for more sensitive applications, which should come close to those of calibrated weighing systems. Many wagon owners can hardly wait to have a solution on the wagon that will replace accurate weighing.

CargoMon was one of the main partners involved in a joint large-scale test to measure and compare technologies for radio links between freight cars for future car-to-car communication. The results were shared within the European ITSS/TIS Working Group and are being fed into Working Group 4 (ITSS WG4). Conclusion: CargoMon was able to demonstrate that Bluetooth Low Energy state-of-the-art systems have sufficient power to communicate across multiple wagons. However, direct radio communication from any wagon to the locomotive (11 wagons) could only be achieved with the Traxnet system, which was also tested.

CargoMon, together with VTG, has successfully tested novel, low-cost wheelset sensors in field trials and was able to successfully detect and distinguish between different types of bearing damage as well as flat spots. In the future, this will make it possible to predict even slowly forming damage in good time. This makes it possible to avoid major consequential damage by dispatching the wagons to a workshop in good time.

CargoMon has strong partners to ensure high quality manufacturing. Following the principle “Designed in Austria and Made in Austria”, CargoMon cooperates with Kapsch Components to flexibly meet all customer needs from a small series to a large series.

Cargomon began rolling out its equipment for Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) in the summer of 2019, and it has since been installed in ÖBB workshops in Austria. The total equipment target for 2021 has been achieved.
Cargomon is proud to be able to implement this important railroad digitization project. We continue to support this digitization with novel sensors that will be used on the market for the first time.
Product innovation:
From simple loading condition detection to overload detection, the new CargoSense product family makes it possible!
CargoSense is a product family of small energy-autonomous wireless sensors that detect different conditions on the wagon and report them to the telematics main unit.
CargoSense-Weight and CargoSense-Display consist of a sensor and a display, which make it possible for the first time to detect the loading condition as well as the weight and a possible overload of a freight wagon in real time at low cost. And that with up to 12 years of battery life !
